Cape Cod (Chatham / Provincetown)

Jun–Sep

A hook-shaped peninsula reaching into the Atlantic. The lighthouses and seals of Chatham, the artists’ town and whale-watching of Provincetown, and the dunes and lighthouses of the National Seashore make up New England’s most quintessential summer coast.

Guide’s notes

The geography is itself a good story: all of Cape Cod was piled up at the end of a glacier, its sandbars are still on the move, and its lighthouses have been relocated whole more than once to escape coastal erosion — a land that is still drifting.

Martha's Vineyard

Jun–Sep

A resort island reached by ferry. The colourful gingerbread cottages of Oak Bluffs, the white whaling-captains’ houses of Edgartown and the red clay cliffs of Aquinnah each have their own character.

Guide’s notes

The gingerbread cottages grew out of nineteenth-century Methodist camp meetings — first tents, then tents rebuilt as wooden houses, which is why they are so small and so intricate. Explain the origin and a row of pretty houses turns from merely charming into genuinely interesting.
